Microsoft to release free antivirus PC software

REDMOND, Wash. — Available as a free download today, Microsoft is releasing Microsoft Security Essentials. The free antivirus software was available over the summer in a beta format, at which time it was known as Morro.

However, as of today, the beta label has come off. Microsoft has advised that their new antivirus software is not intended to compete with other free software providers such as AVG, Avast, and Comodo but rather, it is meant to address the growing concern of Windows users that want “real-time security software, but” “are confused by trials and renewals”.

You will not need to register your new product but in order to download Microsoft Security Essentials, you will need to have a “genuine” Windows PC. The software is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and will also work with Windows 7 when it comes out in October.
